New Orleans: Unnoticed Shapes and Shadows, Noticed
New Orleans Unnoticed, Shapes Shadows & Shades, Noticed
We traveled to New Orleans (Nola) for the holiday. We arrived on December 20 and planned to remain until January 8. We are Krewe members of the first Mardi Gras parade, Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc, which marches on January 6th. In the past we’ve gone for Christmas and returned for the parade. This year we decided to stay during the interim. We are fortunate to have a wonderful place in a great location to stay during the holidays. My sister. Susan, has a condo on Canal and Basin Streets one block from the French Quarter which she makes available to family members. Thank you Susan!
After five family bound days it was evident that my camera was getting edgy. Forlornly pawing at the door she was clearly claustrophobia. A saunter among the old city shapes, shadows and shades of vibrant color was definitely the cure. Being one street away from the Vieux was perfect. Alone with me on the streets sniffing her way along peering into every nook and crevice and pausing to note the way the light fills cracks in the sidewalk or the color of old bricks: Heaven. The day before Christmas was a beautiful day in Nola, clear skies with full sunshine. Suzanne had come down with a respiratory infection passed along by our grandson. My camera threw herself around my neck and drug onto the streets of the French Quarter. In order to keep it satisfied through Christmas I had to promise some additional walks. No problem! I believe I could wander those streets for a very long time and never get bored.
